Manuka Honey and Cancer, and Wound Care Research: What Does the Science Say?

A number of in vitro (cell culture) and animal studies have investigated Manuka honey's effects on cancer cells.
A study published in PLOS ONE examined the potential of Manuka honey as a nutraceutical in the context of breast cancer, finding that certain compounds showed activity against cancer cell lines in laboratory conditions. - Supporting patients undergoing treatment — a randomised controlled trial published in Supportive Care in Cancer (2012) found that Manuka honey significantly reduced the incidence of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis compared to a control group
Manuka Honey and Wound Care Research
One of the most clinically developed areas of Manuka honey research is wound care. Unlike the cancer research above, this is a field where human clinical evidence is considerably more established.
Manuka honey has been studied extensively for its role in:
- Chronic wound management — a systematic review published in the Journal of Wound Care (2015) found that Manuka honey-based dressings showed positive outcomes in the treatment of chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers
- Burn wound healing — a randomised controlled trial in the Burns journal (2012) found that Manuka honey dressings promoted faster healing and reduced infection rates compared to conventional dressings
- Surgical wound infections — research published in the International Wound Journal (2009) documented Manuka honey's effectiveness in managing post-surgical wound infections, including those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA
- Antibiofilm activity — a study in PLOS ONE (2012) demonstrated that Manuka honey was effective at disrupting bacterial biofilms, which are a key challenge in chronic wound infections

Important Limitations
It's essential to understand what this research does and doesn't mean:
- Laboratory results don't automatically translate to human outcomes. Many compounds that show activity against cancer cells in a petri dish have no meaningful effect in the human body.
- No clinical trials have established Manuka honey as a cancer treatment. The research is preliminary and exploratory.
- Honey is high in natural sugars. Some oncologists advise caution around high-sugar foods during certain cancer treatments — always follow your medical team's guidance.
The scientific community is interested in Manuka honey's bioactive compounds as a starting point for further research, not as a proven therapeutic intervention.
Where the Research Is Heading
The most promising area of current research appears to be in supportive care — using Manuka honey to help manage the side effects of conventional cancer treatments. The oral mucositis trial referenced above (Supportive Care in Cancer, 2012) is one of the more clinically developed findings in this space, and further research in this area is ongoing.
A broader review of honey's role in cancer care, published in Integrative Cancer Therapies (2016), concluded that while honey shows promise as a complementary agent, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
